Universal Pictures Rejects Dark Tower Movie Deal

Much in the same style of the multi-part epic novel series of Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings, Stephen King’s Dark Tower series is considered by many as his masterpiece. So, you would figure in the era of movie sequel, novel series mania, studios would be fighting over the right and production of a well-known brand like Stephen King’s Dark Tower series. Throw in the fact that Ron Howard wanted in on directing the series, and you would think it would be a winning combo for sure. Well, apparently, Universal Pictures does not think so.

And some are saying it may be the end of any Dark Tower movie or TV deal for good. Many are also contributing the rejection by Universal as it’s point of view on the complication of which Ron Howard wanted to present the story. Essentially, there are 7 books in the series, each of which are several hundred pages in length. So, think Harry Potter only longer stories that are more complex. The idea was originally to split the books among TV and Movie parts, but so it would be one continuous story. This way some is given to the audience for free, and they will remain more engaged and willing to commit to such a long series.

And while it sounds pretty innovative, it also sounds pretty odd. So, in the end, Universal told Ron Howard and Steven King, “No Thanks,” and the production talks have melted down to nothing. It seems like the Dark Tower series for now is on permanent pause. Let’s see…
